SUPPORTING COMMUNITY LEVEL FLOOD PLANNING

Led by:

Established in 2012, HFR Solutions delivers skills, knowledge and expertise to the commercial sector, building on the team’s years of experience in fire and rescue service work. Using seconded, retired, and operational personnel of Humberside Fire and Rescue, they review and test safety procedures and planning, and deliver workplace safety training.

The challenge

PROJECT PARTNERS

SUPPORTING COMMUNITY LEVEL FLOOD PLANNING

Within their suite of safety training content, HFR Solutions have identified a knowledge gap around supporting parish councils and other community-level institutions to devise and implement flood plans. HFR Solutions are experts in risk and PPE and all the technical aspects of Emergency Response; they also have experience of developing innovative training materials, and would like to apply their experience to develop a ‘Flood-in-a-Box’ product that could be used to deliver flood resilience training to these under-served sectors.

THREE-PRONGED APPROACH TO CREATE FLOOD-IN-A-BOX

The support package developed for HFR Solutions comprised two elements in order to further the Flood-in-a-Box tool idea: chemical analysis tool development and development of an interactive map of contaminant concentrations in flood water.

Our chemical analysis support includes the development of resources to help end-users understand and assess the potential for chemical contamination. Our Technical Research Managers will support HFRS to select appropriate PPE based on modelled contamination scenarios developed with University experts.

Finally, in collaboration with Lampada, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the University of Hull, HFRS will develop a simplified web-based version of Lampada’s LIMA software. LIMA is a fully immersive mapping tool designed for emergency planning and training.

“HFR Solutions are delighted to be once again collaborating with University of Hull. We are developing an innovative approach to the devastating effects of flood and the impact it has on communities at a regional and national level. We very much look forward to working together and genuinely ‘making the Humber region a safer place to live and work’.”

The Results

SUPPORTING HFR SOLUTIONS TO SUPPORT THEIR COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDERS

FIC and University support will ensure that the early prototyping of the product and service are in keeping with the high technical standards help by HFR Solutions. Our approach and support will be underpinned by academic research and the latest information and technology to ensure that the result is a respected, industry-leading product.

It is expected that through the intervention, HFRS will be able to improve their suite of safety training content, raising the ability of parish councils and other community-level institutions to devise and implement flood plans.
